A little Japanese musical gem from the 60s!
Kyu Sakamoto – Sukiyaki Song von Knightrdr
I am surprised I hadn’t spotted this song earlier. A little TV trivia: it was featured in the Mad Men episode “Flight 1”. You can watch the clip here!
Would love to find more 60s music from Japan. Any suggestions?
It has been along time since I heard that song. The Sukiyaki Song was truly a one hit wonder! it had everyone whistling the tune all over the world. I cannot remember though any other song to come out from Japan that made it onto the world stage.
Miriam Makeeba of Africa whose 1957 Hit “PataPata” which actually was only released in the west in 1967 was also a gigantic hit that seemed to come out of nowhere, was even more amazing as you can see, it took 10 years for it to surface from Aparteid South Africa to be massive hit. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
I found the clip (from 67). Thanks for the recommendation.
Sukiyaki represents some of my most cherished memories form that time period.
It is a great song! It is still on my playlists 8 months later 🙂
